Portobello Road Market
Jump straight into the deep end of London street culture with a day out for the whole family, at one of the world’s most famous markets.
What?
Initially established as a fresh food market in the 1800s, Portobello Road Market is now one of London’s biggest and coolest markets, with over 2000 antique dealers in one, relatively small area!
Of course, there’s far more than antiques for sale; you can still find plenty of fresh food, as well as huge amounts of music (new and old) and all kinds of artwork and one-off pieces of home décor. In fact, another of the major attractions of the market is the abundance of vintage and fashionable clothing you’ll find underneath Westway flyover.
If that’s not your thing, you should push onto the absolutely brilliant Golborne Road, where you’ll find an amazingly diverse and eclectic mix of stalls. Exactly what they sell is hard to say – you really do have to experience it for yourself!
Food
You’ll find all kinds of amazing food and drink around the market, but we can particularly recommend Geales’ classy take on classic English fish and chips, or Roly’s café if you fancy something healthy. Alternatively, if you’re in the mood for a sweet treat, try Dri Dri Gelato for some ice cream, or the renowned cupcakes of Hummingbird Bakery.
Who?
The market really does offer something for everybody, though bargain hunters really will be in their element. You’ll find a whole mix of cool people down there too, with a slight leaning towards the trendy side of the populace.
When?
Although a small market runs every day from Monday to Thursday, we recommend you hold out and visit the main markets on Friday and Saturday if you can. The market opens at 08:00 and closes at roughly 18:30, except for on Thursdays when it closes at 13:00.
If you’re not a fan of crowds, we advise you get up early on Friday morning and beat the rush! Also, be sure to take lots of cash with you, as there aren’t many cash points and those you can find will have enormous queues.
Where?
Easily accessible from Notting Hill Gate, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park tube station and by bus routes servicing Ladbroke Grove and Notting Hill Gate. Main market days are Friday and Saturday with a smaller market running Monday to Thursday. An exciting day out for all the family.
From the Megaro: from King’s Cross, take the Victoria Line South towards Brixton and change at Oxford Circus, to take the Central Line East. Exit when you reach Notting Hill Gate and follow signs for Portobello Road.
